Mapping the Caucasus

.

As newspapers like the Washington Post make an admirable effort to explain the complexities of Caucasus politics to ordinary Americans in the wake of last week's attacks while others discover a newfound expertise on the region, it seemed worth posting a few misguided efforts of past scholars to make sense of the region's residents. The map and race charts come from the Caucasian Race by Alexander Javakhishvili in Bulletin de L'Universite de Tiflis, vol iii, 1923. The picture is from 19th century French magazine.
